What do you add to your bath for pure luxury?

30th June 2022

As our name suggests, The Luxury Bath Company is consummately passionate about luxurious bathing. Our clients choose our luxury freestanding baths and natural stone basins to inject instant style and opulence to their bathroom designs, but that is not where the story ends.

Bathing is more than an opportunity to cleanse one’s skin. It’s an occasion to relax, heal, restore and refresh. Skin is the body’s largest organ and absorbs whatever you bathe in or put on it, so it’s important you pay extra attention to what you add to your bath water.

Here is a selection of natural remedies to help transform how you feel – bathing is alchemy after all.

Essential oils for a relaxing luxury bath

Relaxation and bath time go hand in hand. A long soak is the ideal antidote to a stressful day, a way to let the tension float away. Fragrant essential oils have been used for centuries for their therapeutic properties to help treat physical and psychological issues.

For example, lavender reduces stress and anxiety and has historically been used for insomnia and headaches too; Ylang-ylang helps dispel anxiety, fear and worry, and clary sage is famed for clearing the mind and stress reduction. Combine essential oils to customise your bathing experience and to meet your individual needs. For a dreamy bath oil combination, mix the lavender with ylang-ylang, clary sage oil, sandalwood and rose.

TIP: Oil and water do not mix, so to get the most from your essential oils (and to avoid potential skin irritation) combine your essential oils with bath salts such as Dead Sea or Himalayan salt before adding to your bath.

Bath salts for a restorative luxury bath

Bath salts have enjoyed a resurgence in recent times having been usurped by bubbles. Why have they regained popularity? Because people wised up to the drying effects some bubble bath brands have on skin – especially in intimate areas!

Bath salts have a high concentration of minerals and are fantastic at restoring the level of nutrients our bodies lack due to our stressful and modern lifestyles. The individual minerals are essential for good health but when combined create a powerhouse of goodness.

Epsom salt

Epsom salt provides a boost of cell-essential magnesium which brings a host of health benefits too. Epsom salt has a high concentration of active magnesium which makes it so successful at restoring and healing. It exfoliates the skin, detoxes the skin, alleviates muscle pain and eases tension, too; indeed, Epsom salts are an all singing and dancing addition to your bath.

Himalayan salt

Did you know there are approximately 84 minerals in Himalayan salt? Rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron, Himalayan salt offers the purest of minerals – the salt mines are 1,500m below ground and protected from modern pollutants. Used as a skin detoxifier and exfoliator, it balances the pH of your skin, restores lacking minerals and induces sleep – beauty and health in one scoop.

Dead Sea salt

The Dead Sea is recorded as the world’s first health resort – King Herod was a regular visitor. Why did he go? Because the Dead Sea salt has a high concentration of minerals – some of which have never been found anywhere else. Magnesium, bromide, iodine, sulphur, potassium, calcium, sodium, and zinc – all required to nourish and hydrate the skin and accelerate cell renewal. With anti-inflammatory properties and natural antibiotics, Dead Sea offers ongoing relief for skin disorders, cellulite and water retention, while improving circulation and easing hormone fluctuations.

Home remedies for a healing luxury bath

When you get in from work and need to unwind and destress, a stress busting soak is all you need. Home remedies, borne from old-wives’ tales, are time proven if not laboratory tested. Lurking in your kitchen cupboards you most likely have some ingredients you can use to create a healing luxury bath:

Ginger root: a tablespoon of freshly chopped ginger root relieves cold symptoms, nasal congestion and soothes aching muscles. Be warned, the addition of ginger to your bath will make you sweat so keep hydrated.

Oatmeal: oatmeal binds to the skin and creates a protective barrier against irritants and holds moisture against the skin allowing it to act as an emollient. It soothes dry skin and softens it beautifully. Create an oatmeal muslin cloth parcel and place it so the water runs over it – there is nothing luxurious about bathing in porridge!

Honey: for intensely moisturised and hydrated skin, dissolve a cup of honey in hot water before you add it to your bath (ensures it is evenly distributed). The darker the honey, the richer it is in antioxidants.

Bicarbonate of soda: adding 4-5 tablespoons of bicarb to your bath calms, relieves and heals skin irritations by balancing your skin’s pH level and neutralising acidity. Please note this is not recommended for bathers who have high blood pressure, open wounds or people who are nursing.

Whatever you choose to add to your bath to make it luxurious, be mindful that this is your time to switch off and kick back and relax. Whether you like to have a darkened bathroom, enjoy your bath by candlelight, have music playing or you simply relish the silence, a definition of luxury is so very personal.

Your bathroom is your sanctuary and haven. It provides a space where you can shut the door to the world and escape – even for just a few minutes. The Luxury Bath Company are experts at helping our clients achieve their luxury bathroom design goals. We’ll help you choose the best natural stone freestanding bath to support your lifestyle and, of course, your luxury bathing rituals.
